The Origins of ENGwear
University of Toronto, engineering F!ROSH week 1999:
Each year, every member of the incoming class receives a hardhat
to decorate and embellish - an engineering fashion statement.
This year, however, a number of students will go further, transforming
their hardhats into EyeTaps that allow their
eyes to function as cameras. Blending in with the other hardhats,
moving unnoticed in and out of F!ROSH week activities, they will
form a wireless network providing first-person, unobtrusive news
coverage of the week's events by instantly transmitting whatever
they see to the World Wide Web for as long as their batteries last.
The next-generation hardhats will be worn by graduates and students of
Professor Steve Mann's course
ECE1766: Personal Cybernetics
(sometimes called The School for Cyborgs).
